About the airline
Mango Airlines is a cost airline founded in 2006. As a subsidiary of South African Airways, it operates scheduled domestic services on a no-frills, cheap fare basis. The airline’s tongue in cheek advertising and cheap flight prices has since made it a well-loved household brand among travelling South Africans. It is also in direct competition with the likes of low cost carriers such as Kulula.com. FlySafair and Comair.
The airline is headquartered at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, with its main hub situated at the same airport. By 2014 the airline recorded a net profit of R39.1m after tax.
As one would expect with any low cost airline, a standard Mango flight does not include complimentary food or refreshments. These items can, however, be purchased in flight. Entertainment aboard Mango comes in the form of Mango TV and the airline magazine, Mango Juice. The airline, which has benefitted from its position as SAA subsidiary for some years, has recently been facing increasing competition from a number of new budget airlines entering the South African domestic aviation industry.
Air travellers can presently earn SAA Voyager Miles flying Mango, but are not yet able to earn SAA miles flying with Mango. Additional benefits of SAA Voyager such as extra baggage, class upgrades and lounge access benefits are not applicable when flying Mango.
2017 Mango Specials
Mango runs a number of frequent airfare sales and specials, including its highly popular Happy Day Sales and ongoing travel package specials. In late March 2015, for example, the airline offered a package deal to the 4-star Uroa Bay Beach Resort in Zanzibar, Tanzania: 4 nights ex Johannesburg from only R8460 per person sharing a double room, or 7 nights from only R9780 on the same basis. The package deal included return flights from OR Tambo to Zanzibar, hotel transfers, accommodation in a Garden Room and daily breakfasts. The airline is also offering a limited number of 1-way domestic fares from only R669 per ticket for flying until 30 June 2015.
Mango Flight Routes
Mango Airlines operates scheduled flight services countrywide, flying from Cape Town to Johannesburg and back on a daily basis. Additionally, the airline also flies to Durban, George, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg’s Lanseria International Airport on a regular basis. The latter destination is ideal for business travellers needing to travel to the northern suburbs of South Africa’s key economic hub. Regionally, the airline flies to Tanzania’s Zanzibar International Airport, offering South Africans’ wishing a low cost option in terms of flying to this country for a beach break.Durban, George, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg’s Lanseria International Airport on a regular basis.
