About Etihad
Commencing official operations in 2003, Etihad Airways is the second largest airline based out of the United Arab Emirates, after Emirates Airways, and has its head office based in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi.
Operating more than 1 000 flights per week, Etihad services South African destinations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, on selected routes, as well as 120 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas.
Airline History
The airline’s first ceremonial flight landed at Al Ain on 5 November, 2003, while later in the same month Etihad commenced commercial operations throughout the Middle East, with a launch of initial services to Beirut.
Established as the second flag carrier in UAE by royal decree issued by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the airline formed its own airline alliance in 2015, which includes: Alitalia, Jet Airways, Niki, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles and Etihad Regional.
In October 2016, Etihad was rated one of a small number of 5-star airlines operating across the globe by Skytrax.
Destinations
As of September 2013, the airline runs successful operations to 116 passenger and cargo destinations, across all six inhabited continents, one of the few carriers worldwide, to offer this kind of extensive network. 2015 saw Etihad Airways carry 14.8 million passengers across the globe – a 22.3% increase from the previous year, delivering a revenue of US $9 billion.
