About the airline
The LATAM Airlines Group S.A., headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is a South American airline holding company incorporated under Chilean law. The airline now offers direct international flights from Johannesburg International Airport to Sao Paulo, Brazil.
LATAM provides services to a host of South American destinations, including Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Paraguay. Other global destinations include Europe, the United States, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand.
Airline History
The airline was born out of a merger between two airlines: Lan Airlines in Chile, and Tam Airlines, Brazil. In June 2012, both airlines signed a merger agreement to form LATAM Airlines, under the guidance of former CEO Enrique Cueto.
As of August 2015, all LATAM Airline Group airlines were re-branded under the unified brand of LATAM, with a single, amalgamated branding projected to be applied to all aircraft by 2018.
Key international destinations
With one of Latin America’s most extensive network of domestic and international connections, LATAM Airlines operates a fleet of 319 aircraft, transporting passengers to 133 destinations in 23 countries across the globe. The group’s main hubs in South American include Santiago, Chile, Lima, Bogota and Columbia as well as Sao Paulo, Brazil – now operating as the main hub for flights into South Africa.
Cabin & Flight Classes
Economy Class
All economy class cabins offer modern, reclining seats with adjustable head rests, comfortable upholstery, numerous entertainment options, with specified aircraft offering individual screens and entertainment libraries, as well as a hosting service.
Premium Economy
The Premium Economy cabin offers fully reclining, leather seats, with increased width and leg room, as well as a centre seat that can be converted into a desk space.
Premium Business
Premium Business class offers a personalised hosting service, an excellent menu and wine selection, and 32% more space per passenger, with seats that recline to a fully horizontal position to form a bed.
The 2017 Fleet
With approximately 319 aircraft in its fleet, LATAM Airlines is made up of state-of-the-art Boeing and Airbus aircraft:
- Boeing 787-9 – 12 aircraft in service
- Boeing 787-8 – 10 aircraft in service
- Boeing 767-300 – 23 aircraft in service
- Airbus 321 – 11 aircraft in service
- Airbus 320-200 – 72 aircraft in service
- Airbus 319 – 26 aircraft in service.
On Board Entertainment
The airlines’ Airbus 350 and Boeing 767, 777 and 787 include individual screens for personal entertainment, offering an extensive entertainment library. While individual screens are not available throughout the entire fleet, passengers can download the LATAM Entertainment App and access an entertainment library from their mobile phones or tablets. The Vamos LATAM in-flight magazine is also available for in flight entertainment.
For international flights, dining options include breakfast, lunch and dinner, depending on the duration of the flight, as well as snacks and a full bar service.
Baggage Allowance
Between South Africa / Africa and South America
Economy class travellers are permitted two bags, not weighing more than 23kgs each.
Premium Business and Premium Economy travellers are allowed up to three bags, each weighing no more than 23kgs.
The maximum weight for hand luggage for economy class passengers is 8kgs, while Premium Business and Premium Economy passengers are not permitted more than 16kgs per person.
Rewards / Frequent Flyer Program
Regular LATAM Airlines travellers are encouraged to become a LATAM Pass Member, accruing frequent flyer miles when flying with any Oneworld Alliance airline – an airline partner and affiliate of the airline. Accumulated frequent flyer miles with Oneworld Alliance offer potential round-the-world travel for all loyal passengers.

With an already extensive flight network, LATAM Airlines added a 9-hour direct flight to South Africa, landing at Johannesburg International Airport. This is the first ever direct route into South Africa offered by the Latin American airline, now departing from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
