About the airline
Fastjet Plc (www.fastjet.co.za) is the British based parent company for a group of low cost airlines operating in Africa. The airline serves South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and more recently Mozambique as well. Founded in November 2012, Fastjet’s stated aim is to become Africa’s first low-cost, pan-African airline. During 2016, the airline reported revenues in excess of $68.5 million, with an operating income of $63.9 million.
Fastjet in South Africa
The airline recently moved their headquarters to Johannesburg, South Africa, as part of a cost savings exercise intended to return the airline top profitability. Under the airline’s new leadership, international routes were dropped airplane sizes were decreased and supply contracts renegotiated to help return the airline to profitability. The airlines model, however, will still focus on leisure and business travel.
As of November 2017, Fasjet flights can now also be booked from Johannesburg to Tete and Maputo in Mozambique. The airline will be taking on LAM and SAA along these routes. The airline management has stated that they’ll not be focusing on the Cape Town to Johannesburg flight route in terms of ramping up their SA flight operations, given that Kulula is well established, and Mango has the financial backing of its parent company, South African Airways.
The airline’s stated aim is also to commence flight operations in West Africa, using Ghana as a hub.
