United Continental Holdings Inc. is the parent company of United Airlines, and is head quartered in Chicago, Illinois. When assessed by the extensive amount of destinations served, both domestic and international, the company is recognised as the second largest airline in the world.
United Airlines holds a substantial presence in the Asia-Pacific region, and also offers flights to South Africa, via Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban International airports.
Previously known as United Air Lines (UAL), and operated by aircraft manufacturing giant, Boeing, in 1933, the United Airlines of today is the founding member of Star Alliance – the world’s largest global airline alliance, headed by CEO, Oscar Munoz.

Cabin and Flight Classes
Economy class includes comfortable seating, selected in-flight entertainment options, complimentary soft drinks, juices, tea and coffee, while snack boxes can be purchased in-flight. Fresh meals are also served on flights longer than three hours.
Economy Plus passengers have access to wider seats as well as 5-inches of additional legroom. For long-haul flights, complimentary blankets and pillows are offered, while a full bar service is available. Additionally, passengers receive a meal service, and mid-flight and pre-arrival snack. Travellers are permitted one checked in bag and have premier access to a large entertainment library on private screens.
A designated premier access at check-in counters and at security checks, as well as priority boarding, is offered to Business and First Class passengers with luxury seating, adjustable head rests, personal storage spaces and power outlets on board. Travellers have access to an extensive entertainment library as well as Wi-Fi, which is on-hand for purchase. Meal options offer a premium dining experience, formulated by renowned chefs, while a vast selection of wines, spirits, soft drinks, teas and coffee are served.

A variety of entertainment options are on-hand for travellers to enjoy, including up-to-date television series, movies, audio selections, games, children’s programmes and DIRECTV, as well as an in-flight magazine, Hemisphere.
On all United Airlines flights, the standard checked luggage weight is 23kg for economy and economy plus travellers, while each bag must not exceed 158cm (62 inches) in dimension.
First and business class travellers are permitted a maximum of 32kg per checked bag, while dimensions must also adhere to 158cm (62 inches).
Extra baggage may be accepted at an additional charge, depending on available space on the aircraft – extra charges can be checked via the website.
The maximum dimensions for hand luggage are limited to: 22 x 35 x 56cm.
Rewards / Frequent Flyer Programme
Travellers can join the MileagePlus programme which rewards them with frequent flyer points to be redeemed when purchasing flights with United Airlines, Star Alliance and partner carriers, car rental, hotel stays and selected merchandise.

A United Airlines flight from London to Los Angeles was a scene of tragedy when Hollywood actress and writer, Carrie Fisher, reportedly suffered a heart attack just before landing. United Airlines issued a statement that Flight 935 was met by medical personnel immediately after safe landing at Los Angeles International Airport.
IT issues cause chaos for United Airlines but CEO Oscar Munoz responds with honesty
IT problems grounded United Airlines in 2016 and again in January of this year, causing frustration and anguish for passengers. While the necessary apologies were extended by the airline to stranded travelers, CEO, Oscar Munoz also met in an open and candid meeting with workers. Munoz compared the complexity of trying to fix the IT systems all at once with the airline still in operation, to changing all four tyres on a moving car.
